Why is Vegan Garlic Mayo always listed as an ingredient? Is it a conspiracy or am I missing something?

TL;DR; I’ve gone insane trying to find a vegan garlic mayo recipe.

So I’m a uni student trying to eat more plant-based food. A month or two ago I decided to make a vegan garlic mayo recipe because I love mayo. Don’t judge me.

I went to Google and clicked on the top link, which I think was from BBC Good Food. Everything looked normal at first. But as I scrolled down to the ingredients section, I saw something weird. They listed vegan garlic mayo as an ingredient. What the heck?

I thought it was just a mistake. Silly me. So I went to another link, this time a vegan food blog. I thought this was it. Nope! Again, vegan garlic mayo listed as an ingredient. I thought, maybe they copied the BBC recipe. But no, this happened on the third, fourth, and fifth links too! Is this some sort of prank? Did I get a virus that adds vegan garlic mayo to every recipe I look at?

I went to my local library and checked out a couple of vegan cookbooks. I thought surely this would be different. But nope! One of them had a garlic mayo recipe too.

What is going on? How do you make garlic mayo if it already exists? Did someone find a jar of garlic mayo from 200,000 years ago? Can we trace garlic mayo back to a specific family tree? What if we run out of garlic mayo? Should we put some in the seed bank in the Arctic just in case?

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Here’s a recipe:

2 garlic cloves, finely grated
6 Tbsp. vegan mayonnaise
1 tsp. extra-virgin olive oil
1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
salt and freshly ground pepper

Stir the garlic, vegan mayonnaise, olive oil, and lemon juice in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper.

Do ahead: You can make it up to 6 hours in advance. Just cover and chill.

You really missed the chance to add vegan garlic mayo as an ingredient though!

We love this mayo recipe. Add a ton of garlic powder and fresh garlic cloves until it tastes perfect. :sunglasses:

Are you trying to mix garlic into mayo or make mayo from scratch with garlic?

For mixing: Just buy vegan mayo and mix garlic in.

For making it from scratch: Try this recipe but add garlic: https://youtube.com/shorts/j9c0YJkgjpw?si=Id5_sqUANZQGe7PQ

I’m going nuts just thinking about how you created a new recipe name: eternal garlic unicorn mayo. That’s cool!

The internet seems to be gaslighting you because it’s pretending there’s no such thing as vegan mayo. It’s telling you to stop obsessing over ‘fake’ products and just call it vegan. Maybe you could mix chopped garlic with avocado for garlic mayo? Or just puree garlic and call it a spread. I found out that there are actually some garlic mayo brands out there too – like this one: link to a vegan garlic mayo

I found the recipe they keep referring to here: BBC review.

Here’s a garlicky vegan mayo recipe: link to recipe

Toum is a traditional garlic-based sauce, kind of like mayo. You might want to give it a try if you love garlic. Here’s a recipe for it: link to recipe

I’ve noticed this with lots of recipes. They are all variations, but they get more clicks when they make it seem like something new or misleading.

Maybe you’re actually looking for a recipe for vegan Aioli?

  1. Go to store
  2. Pick one
  3. Buy it

Make Toum. It’s awesome!
