Why did Club crackers start adding milk? Is it really necessary?

I’ve had Kellogg’s Club Cracker Minis in my pantry for years because they were accidentally vegan. I went to buy a new box and saw a warning on the front saying ‘see updated allergen info.’ Turns out they added whey in the ‘contains <2%’ section of the ingredients. Why would they do that? Why add a small amount of an allergen to something that was already perfect? So frustrating… Why is this happening?

Maybe it’s for the government subsidies

I don’t think you fully understand subsidies

Subsidies are meant to keep food prices down by ensuring there’s enough supply. A lot of the subsidies go to crops like potatoes, cereals, and onions, which are widely used, including for vegan food.

@Whitney
And don’t forget soy and corn, which are mostly used as animal feed. Like over 80% of it.

Yeah, only about 1% of agricultural subsidies actually go toward produce.

It’s mostly wheat, barley, and some big rich people with their luxury farms. Animal feeds are fine, just not for humans.

@Whitney
But wouldn’t most people eating those foods be omnivores?

@Whitney
I guess no one else eats potatoes, huh?

People still complain about food prices, though. It’s time to stop relying on subsidies.

Who’s complaining here though? :roll_eyes:

@Whitney
You’re explaining subsidies like it’s news to everyone. The OP is saying Kellogg’s sees this as an opportunity to cut costs.

True, I should’ve mentioned that manufacturers benefit too. It’s not just about subsidies, it’s about reducing costs with the help of others.

@Whitney
Actually, corn gets the most subsidies, but most of it goes to livestock feed, ethanol, and food additives. Here’s the full list of most subsidized products:

  1. Corn
  2. Soybeans
  3. Sugar
  4. Cotton
  5. Wheat
  6. Oranges
  7. Livestock
  8. Hay and forage

At least they told us about the change :roll_eyes: but seriously, why is it that suddenly all the bread, wraps, crackers, and stuff I used to eat have milk in them when they used to be vegan? It’s so frustrating.

No way! Is this also happening with the regular-sized ones?

The store brands usually use vegetable oils instead of dairy. I don’t know about the Club crackers, but this is true for many crackers and ‘Chips Ahoy’ type cookies.

Wait, you’re saying there are store brand cookies like Chips Ahoy that are vegan? That’s amazing!

@Jamie
I think the Walmart chewy chocolate chip cookies are vegan, as far as I remember.
