Dear vegans, how do you deal with killing mosquitoes?
I always kill them when I see them, it’s just instinct. I know if I don’t, they will bite me and could carry diseases. But at the same time, I feel like a hypocrite. I promote a cruelty-free lifestyle, and yet, I kill these mosquitoes. What do you think about this?
I don’t know how you can do that. I never really see them, just feel their bites. The other day I saw one on my hand, but I instinctively blew it off. It bit me, but it doesn’t bother me anymore.
The mosquito is being cruel to you, even if it doesn’t have much of a choice. Honestly, when it comes to insects, I don’t think we have many options sometimes. If you drive a car, you’re probably killing hundreds of insects just by driving. I think the best we can do is to avoid it when we can. Don’t feel bad!
It’s your choice whether to kill the mosquito or not. Nothing really changes whether you do or not, just like being vegan. Choosing to be vegan or not is a choice, but it doesn’t have a huge effect on the world. Life is full of choices like this, like whether to get a cat or a dog, or what to have for dinner. You shouldn’t force your choice onto others because you think it’s better, that’s just your opinion. So kill it or don’t, it’s up to you.

Nobody’s talking about saving the planet here. What bothers me about people who don’t understand veganism is how they treat animals like they’re just objects. To a vegan, it’s not about whether anything changes in the world, it’s about not contributing to cruelty themselves.
