So, I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I’ve been vegetarian for 10 years and I’m curious if anyone has calculated how many animals they’ve spared from being eaten. I live in the U.S. and want to base my data on typical eating habits here. How many cows, pigs, chickens, and fish would a person like me have eaten compared to others who eat meat regularly? I’m interested in how this would work out over the years. Any thoughts on how to do this or has anyone tried it?

The site says I’ve not eaten 6,500 animals, but I find it hard to believe anyone my age who eats meat would have eaten that many.

I’ve been vegetarian since birth, so I’ve got a lot of years without eating animals. But it’s still hard to believe someone could eat 6,500 animals by my age.

You mentioned that, but how old are you exactly? People eat a lot of chickens, so the numbers add up.
@Marley
If your numbers are saying that if you only eat chicken, you’d eat 200 chickens a year… that seems unbelievable to me.

Well, if you use my numbers, it comes out to about 0.55 animals per day. It’s up to you whether you find that believable, but people really do eat a lot of meat. I didn’t create the site or its numbers though.
@Marley
I guess it’s possible for some people, but I doubt it’s the majority. I once met a guy who didn’t eat anything green until he was 23. I also didn’t think about the fish part. You could easily eat 10+ whitebait in one meal.
Honestly, who cares? It’s not a competition.

I think the original poster can ask this question. There are already calculators out there for this, so they’re not the first to wonder about it. This info might also help people who are vegetarian for ethical reasons.
@Hux
If ethics is someone’s main reason for being vegetarian, I’d assume they’re vegan.
That’s easy. Zero.
