I don’t know any vegans personally, which makes me feel a little isolated in my thoughts. It’s why I’m posting here. I just want to know if others feel the same way. Every time meat is mentioned or consumed, I can’t help but think about how brutal and unnecessary it feels to me. It’s so accepted by society that I start doubting my own sanity for being so firm about veganism. Does anyone else feel trapped in their mind like this? This extends to all animal products, but for me, eating flesh is the worst of all.
I know exactly what you mean. The hypocrisy is what gets to me. People will cry over a rabbit and find eating them shocking in some places, but have no problem eating pigs, which are much smarter animals.
@Lane
Yes, exactly! Our beliefs are seen as extreme, but once you understand how cruel animal agriculture is, it seems so obvious.

Completely agree. Once I saw what happens behind the scenes, I stopped eating all animal products immediately.
I feel the same. It’s strange to me that buying and eating animal parts is so normal. I’ve been vegan since I was a teen, so I never even bought meat myself. I’m lucky to have a group of vegan friends who share my views, but it’s still shocking how common animal cruelty is.
@Jesse
I went vegetarian at 13 and vegan at 16, so that probably shaped my perspective a lot too.
I wouldn’t say it’s the weirdest thing humans do. Historically, people have done much worse, even to each other. Eating animal parts is still strange, but it’s not the most bizarre behavior out there.

True, like how Rasputin’s body parts were preserved. That’s on another level of strange.
It’s so hard to watch good, kind people turn a blind eye to this cruelty. Sometimes I feel like dragging them to a vigil and making them face it.
Sorry, I didn’t catch that—I was eating chicken.

Oh, that’s fine. I didn’t hear you either since I was eating human.

Wait, you committed a crime? Have you turned yourself in yet?
I don’t like eating meat, but I don’t follow a vegan or vegetarian diet. I tried once, but it was really difficult for me.

If you think it’s hard for you, imagine how hard it is for the animals who live their lives as commodities.
@Quince
I do think about that. It’s one of the reasons I don’t enjoy eating meat, but it’s hard to break out of old habits.

Veganuary could be a good time to try again. None of us chose to be part of animal cruelty—we were raised into it. But we can all make the choice to stop. Give it a go, it’s easier than it seems!

What parts of it were difficult for you?

For one, I found it more expensive. Also, my husband is firmly in the ‘meat is essential’ camp. Coming from the South, my family just couldn’t grasp why I wouldn’t eat ham in my pinto beans or why I needed a separate pot for meat-free spaghetti sauce.
