I’ve got a big bag of black lentils to use up. Any ideas for what I can make? I see so many curry recipes, but I’d love to try something different. Suggestions welcome!
Dishoom’s black dal is a top choice. The full recipe takes a while, but I found a quick version with an Instant Pot. It’s always way better the next day, though.
EDIT: Here’s the full recipe for anyone interested: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2019/sep/07/four-classic-indian-recipes-dishoom-chaat-dal-salad-jackfruit-biyani-chicken-makhani-curry
@Jessie
I’ve tried the Dishoom recipe too! Took me about 6 hours, and by then I was too tired to enjoy it.
But yeah, it’s amazing in their restaurant!

Yep, the Instant Pot is usually my choice. Every time, though, I wish I’d made it a day earlier to let it settle.

Haha, ‘lost my will to live’
I saw this show once where they had pro chefs make home-cook recipes. Most of them were so intense, they’d probably make regular people want to give up halfway!
I love black lentils! They keep their shape well, and I like the taste more than green lentils.
Try roasting them at 300°F for 10–20 minutes for a crunchy snack, or use them in tacos! Just pan-fry after cooking them and season like you would for taco meat. They also hold up great in soups!
@Quin
Wait, roast them? Now I’m really curious about how they’d turn out!

Yes! Just cook first, then season and roast like chickpeas. They make awesome snacks, though they’re best eaten fresh.
@Quin
Thank you! I’ll definitely give it a try soon!
Braised black lentils are super tasty and simple. Here’s the recipe I like: This.

Best way to enjoy black lentils!
I often make lentil bolognese with black lentils. It’s one of my go-to meals. I recommend using extra red wine for flavor!

Just prepped some for my lunches this week. Thanks for the tip!
Try an Ethiopian-style lentil stew like Misr Wot from That Green Lyfe. It’s got a unique flavor!
Make them into burger patties! Also great with fried egg, or in salads with mango, or even tossed in with pasta for extra protein. A splash of lemon or orange juice adds a nice kick and helps with nutrient absorption.
Edit: or try a cheesy casserole
@Cleo
I think I’ll try the burger idea. Thanks!
I love lentil sausage soup. Here’s a recipe: Pressure Cooker Lentil Soup With Sausage Recipe
I also enjoy this butternut squash salad: Roasted Butternut Squash With Lentils and Feta Recipe
And if you like something similar, try this brown butter sweet potato and lentil salad: Brown Butter Lentil and Sweet Potato Salad Recipe
If you like Indian food, try Dal Makhni. It’s delicious!
If they’re flat and round, they might be red lentils with skins. Use like regular lentils! Great with spinach or leafy greens, or make soups or pasta sauces with them.
