I have some pretty serious auto immune diseases that resulted in me losing almost all of my hair. All. Of. It. Like my eyelashes are falling out. I’m 30F. Happened during pregnancy and got worse pp.
I was so so so hopeful signing up for a contract with a functional medicine doc. She told me I need to follow the paleo autoimmune protocol, eating meat and fish and giving up seeds, beans, nuts, grains!
I said I won’t eat animals and she said I’ll only get worse being vegan. And she used to be vegetarian so she gets it.
I’m so upset for multiple reasons. She knew I was vegan before our first meeting. I wish she just told me before we even met that she won’t accommodate.
I know you can very healthy vegan.
She told me to just start cooking veggies in bone broth. Even that makes me want to puke thinking of it.
Also said it is impossible to be healthy pregnant.
Not going to do it. Just so upset. I want my hair back lol.
As a nurse, allow me to advise you to see a rheumatologist. You must be taking medication that persuades your body to cease self-attacks. It could be as ordinary as taking Prednisone or as powerful as IVIG infusions. There is no magic diet that is going to cure an autoimmune disease.
As a certified dietician, my mother has experience treating (well, feeding) patients with a wide range of ailments at hospitals. Moreover, she is vegan. I may forward this information to her and report back to you if you would like to give more details.
However, I concur with the other remarks: look for a different doctor and ask more questions about the nutrition rather than the chemicals.
I hope that things improve for you! You seem to be going through a lot.
The Paleo diet is a fad; its advantages have not been established. I would avoid any physician who suggests it. It’s not even grounded on the real paleolithic diet. It is primarily based on antiquated misconceptions that have been disproved by paleobotany, which reveals a much larger number of plants were consumed than previously believed.
Edit for clarity: Since I’m not a medical expert, I can’t comment on your situation, but if you can, you should definitely obtain a second opinion.
Is it possible for you to schedule a consultation with a dermatologist or a hair loss specialist? Is this individual a licensed physician? Though I’m not a doctor, I believe that the type of alopecia you’re describing cannot be treated with food.
Individuals who claim to understand it because they were vegetarians in the past are simply expressing the fact that they are not and never were.
Can you ask them to explain what the exact shortage is that you purportedly “need” the flesh of deceased animals to obtain? For one thing, they make vegan protein supplements if all you need is protein.
They won’t be able to address this issue, though, since they are an FM practitioner and don’t bother themselves with things like underlying health concerns or proof…
