Long-time vegan here (19 years now, plus 7 years of vegetarian diet before that) and I just was hospitalized for acute appendicitis.
I had the impression that a high fiber diet protected us from this. I’ve tracked my diet for periods of time before and I was eating more than double the fda recommended fiber most days. On “bad diet” days I was still hitting the fiber goal. So what gives?
I’m wondering if I’m an outlier who just got unlucky or if there are more of you out there. My google research was kind of inconclusive. Give me your anecdotal evidence so I feel better?
It’s type of a disaster that occurs. While there are many things you can do to lower your risk of certain illnesses, no method is 100% effective. It’s best to try not to get too worked up over things like this because biology may be unpredictable at times. Even if you follow every precaution, bad luck can still strike.
Despite not smoking or being around secondhand smoke, my mother passed away from cancer because she was frightened of the disease. That’s how harsh mother nature can be.
I read years ago that too much protein was the main dietary factor associated with appendicitis. The majority of people underestimate their demand for protein. Could you perhaps have a look at that?
For this reason, “vegans” who sell “health food” should give up.
Sadly, bodies will eventually break. Eating plant-based “can” help prevent some things, but it doesn’t take into consideration the unique needs of each individual.
Yes, I did have this. Like most illnesses, it’s one of those sporadic “shit happens” situations. Unfortunately, despite what some people on social media would have you believe, veganism is not a superpower.
Due to poor genetics, a really healthy kid in middle school had hers surgically removed at random. We were all terrified when the doctor said that anyone could experience it, so don’t assume that it’s something to do with food.
